Combativity Prize, Tour Of Britain and Cav...
The Tour Of Britain came to an exciting climax on Sunday in Guildford. Not just for the fantastic victory overall of Jon Tiernan Locke and brilliant stage win by Mark Cavendish but I had a part to play as well.
I had been asked to provide some artwork for the overall winner of the combativity prize of the whole Tour of Britain, sponsored by Rouleur Magazine. So the piece you see [which is based around my 'one day in july piece' with a Tour of Britain twist] was printed up, framed and was there to meet me on Sunday, when I went along with my Dad to watch the race and present the prize to the overall combativity winner on the podium... a certain rider by the name of Mr Mark Cavendish.
The race reached its exciting climax and I was called up onto the podium. The crowds were HUGE... British cycling is currently on the crest of a wave, and with people 10 deep or more at the barriers it was mind blowing. Mark came up to join me, collect his flowers, have a shake of the hand and then came the interesting task of trying to hand over the HUGE print to one of cyclings current icons. I said "I hope you enjoy sticking it on your wall..." I was met by a wide Cavendish smile. It was a moment I won't forget. If he fails to re-capture his world champs jersey on Sunday I think I can safely say to be the final person to shake his hand on a podium in the stripes. He's done that jersey proud.
For a closer look at the very rare one off print [perhaps now hanging in Mark Cavendish's loo...] click on the image.
