I was amazed this morning to read this piece on the Bicycling Magazine website. Bill Strickland, the magazines editor, (and someone i have corresponded with a lot recently after working on a commission for him) has written a really rather glowing review of my work. He even compares my work with the art great Keith Haring, which is a huge compliment. Sometimes its difficult to comprehend the impact the drawings i do have, and its things like this that make me realise that more than one man and his dog takes a look at this site. A big thanks to Bill and those at Bicycling Magazine for their support. Above you can see a couple of the portraits I've been working on as commissions recently. They've been for clients as far flung as Australia and so far its been fantastic fun to create these illustrations for cyclists and fans of cycle sport. Below is a little feedback I've received:

Mark said: I love the image! It resembles me physically, of course, but more than that it captures a spirit and a feeling which perfectly sums up how I feel about riding my bike. The little smirk (the same as Tommy

Above you can see my CATO portrait for Cato Felan, who got in touch recently and asked me to create this print for him. I've been thinking about offering these portraits for a while and working with Cato has made me realise how much fun it is. So, I'm now offering this to ALL!!!

You will get to work with me one to one and end up with something completely unique. I work with a great printers in Brighton who have been working with artists for many years. They use Giclee printing for really vibrant colours and the paper used for each portrait is 100% cotton 310g watercolour paper, which really looks fantastic.

Jack Thurston, the presenter of the Resonance FM show The Bike Show, approached me to create a new logo for his website, itunes, and twitter branding. I love listening to the show and was chuffed to bits that Jack had got in touch. The plan was to keep it simple and distinctive whilst maintaining the bike, London and fun element of the show. Hope you like it...

Since writing this post I have been a guest on 'the bike show' discussing the 'life and times of the cycling jersey' with presenter Jack Thurston, Photographer and co author [with Team Sky rider Michael Barry] of the fantastic book 'Le Metier' Camille Mcmillan, and designer and co creator of Rapha, Luke Scheybeler. I've worked with Milltag again, to create a jersey for their GB Legends series. Ed at Milltag asked me to create a jersey inspired by the sprint king Chris Hoy, and i happily obliged. It was tricky to get the right mix of patriotism and cycling, made more tricky by the fact we weren't really allowed to use the olympic rings or world champs stripes. For a rider who basis himself around these race it meant some scratching of heads and bouncing around of ideas before the final design was settled on. But i'm really pleased with how it turned out. The Super Moshis Need You...

I've been working on the kids site MoshiMonsters for just over a year now, and within that time the product, team at MindCandy and number of people playing the game [about 37million people when this was written] have gone from strength to strength. Working on fun character animation all the time has helped me develop my skills further and coming up with ideas and items for the game keeps my imagination buzzing with new little ideas that one day might make it into the game. With a succesful line of toys and books etc being launched it seems the sky's the limit for MoshiMonsters... and it's pretty cool to be a part of.

This piece of Flash animation is something I've just finished for our "Super Moshi Missions" section of the game, in it you solve puzzles and play games in an effort to defeat the Evil Dr Strange Glove... The illustrations were created by Trevor White and I hope you like it... More to come from Moshi soon.

Rouleur 22... PANTANI

Rouleur Issue 22 has hit the door mats of many people over the past couple of days, soon you'll be able to buy it online and in the many stockists across the world.

It's difficult to remember some times how many people read the mag and enjoy the six copies they get every year. Comments i often read about include loving the smell of the print, the feel of the paper and just how great it is to get the new copy of this most exciting of cycling magazines.

If you have read this blog [and not just looked at the pictures] you will know i am not one for words, or words that often mean a great deal or are strung together with any gravitas or even spelt correctly.

this piece on Marco Pantani has been a lot of work, so much so that when i came to the end i felt a bit flat, crest fallen almost at the thought that it was done and that it had all finished. The research went away and i sent all the pages over to the mag. I am over the moon with the piece, it's my favorite story to date and there is something about watching Marco Pantani that seems to have got under my skin.

That's maybe why i felt sad when I finished, I know more about the man now than I ever did, it's easy [and internet forums are full of people moaning] to spout off about how he doped [which he did] and took recreational drugs [which he did also] but by watching hour after hour of footage of him on a bike, he was still one hell of a bike rider and more importantly a true character of the sport. That's why I choose to keep the story about the racing, covering his life as a bike racer from his Baby Giro days, to his Giro win in 1998.

Working, re-working, tearing up bits of paper, researching, considering how I was going to get the life of one of cycling's most interesting characters into my alloted 12 pages of Rouleur. Finally things started to come together, and as December hit us with snow, crippled public transport systems and bitter cold i was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It took about six months to get the piece to a place where i was happy.

So after late nights, early mornings and a small mountain of tea bags, something that began as one word from Guy Andrews [Rouleur Editor] 'PANTANI' now takes up twelve pages of a magazine i really enjoy reading. I hope you do too... Thanks

As 2010 draws to a rather chilly close and the uk is blanketed under snow, we can only dream of what the summer season will have in store for us. It seems a long way off at the moment as riders trying to get some long winter base miles in rug up against the artic air. But sooner than we realise we will be screaming at our tv's or luckier still standing by the very roads are heroes pass by on.

With so many great races on the horizon it seems impossible to know where to start, but with the new 2011 calendar from Rouleur you can prepare the beers in the fridge or book time off work to go and see the races in person, because this calendar lets you know when the races appear through the months to come. I've known this product was on its way for a while and to be invited to be part of it was fantstic. The image chosen from mine was from issue 18 of the magazine and shows riders zipping by the family at the side of the road.

I was however, unaware it was going to be the front cover of the whole bloomin thing... which i was amazed at... thanks all at Rouleur for another great year.

Fusion Media T-shirt Designs...

I was recently contacted by Adam Tranter at Fusion Media to design a t-shirt for them, and having been aware of their work for a while i was keen to work with this exciting new cycling firm... The branding they use contains images of riders such as Dean Downing [Rapha Condor Sharp Cycling Team] being covered in bright orange paint, with the tag line 'We've Got Cycling Covered' and i was keen to carry this on to the shirt design above... Keep your eyes peeled for Adam, his team and hopefully me [hint hint] modelling the shirts soon... I hope you like it...

Here is my design for the new series of Milltag jerseys. Its Based around the classic french jersey with white and blue stripes, 2cv’s and cycling silhouettes, it symbolises to me all that is great about LeTour, riders, racing and summer. The three colour jerseys appear on the rear pockets to keep you motivated through the tough climbs, sprinting for a sign on the club run or leading the bunch on the way to the cafe. I don't normally make comments on this blog... i tend to leave it for illustration, however, i felt i needed to comment on the tragic death of Laurent Fignon.

His monumental battle with Greg Lemond in 1989 stands as my first memory of bike racing. Sat at home on the sofa with my Dad when i was 7 years old, watching that tour, and begnining to understand the ins and outs of a race which i am still obsessed with means that, for me, it stands out as one of my all time favourites.

When asked to cover the race for Rouleur Magazine i revisited and studied the race in much more detail, and it was during this time, surrounded by dvd's and books, that it hit home to me how strong a racer and tactition Fignon was. If the race could be won, he was going to do anything in his power to be the man that won it. That is how i will remember Laurent Fignon, the racer, the tactition, le professeur...

I had the previous look for my blog for quite a while, and whilst working on a design for a cycle jersey with awesome new company Milltag the new Brand ID for 'me' came about. Suddenly the duck i had been using seemed dated and a bit lacking in any cycle based illustration gubbins. So when Ed Cowburn from Milltag sent me this through i thought it was perfect. I want to thank Ed for creating the new RichMitch logo, i'm really happy with it... what is it Cuddles The Monkey said 'i hate that duck'...

T-shirts at Rapha Cycle Club NYC

Early this month, the Rapha Cycle Club NYC opened, it is very similar in outlook to the London shop, showing live cycling, with good coffee, good people and lots of rapha stuff on hand [including Rouleur Books and Magazines.]

Very soon [towards the middle of this month] they will start stocking my t-shirts... When the shirts were sold in the London pop up shop it was great to head there and see them hanging on the rails, but i won't be able to get to NYC, so if you see them, take a pic and send me it via twitter [link on the left] I hope people in the USA enjoy them, having never been to the states myself it is pretty sweet to think that some American chaps and chapesses will be pulling them on and heading down the sidewalk wearing my designs...

When a second run of 'legends of the road' t-shirts was mentioned my eye brows raised quite considerably.

The work i do is always fun to create and to see the final product is great; to imagine that more than me, my mum and dad and perhaps one other cycle nut may part with their hard earned cash for a piece i've drawn is humbling. So far Rouleur has seen them fly out of the online door, and as the second batch of shirts to be sold was announced [of the same riders] about a month ago it was also mentioned to me that cycling coolness giant Rapha, were very keen to sell them in their new London based pop up shop or 'The Rapha Bicycle Club'. You can therfore find my t-shirts in what can only described as a proper shop... And what a shop! having been down there on its opening night i can only say that for cycle/style fans this is THE place to visit. Good coffee, all the major races on the cycling calendar on a big screen and everything rapha/rouleur on sale....

Since i blogged last a couple of really exciting things have happened... one of them only this morning. The first involves Publishing House Gestalten, they approached me a couple of months ago to be part of their new book 'VELO - Bicycle Culture and Design'... To be part of something like this kinda blew me away, i think i'm still getting used to the fact that my work is more 'out there' in the public eye and so to be involved in a book which i would probably buy and have on my shelf at home kinda knocked me for six... after i scraped myself off the floor and sent them the images they required it left my head, until only recently, when the preview of the book popped up on the Gestalten website. It is due to come out in the next couple of weeks, and i think will be available in the usual funky book shops. I can't wait to go into a shop and see it...

The second piece of 'knock me over crazy' happened this morning, and through the power of my new best friend 'twitter' [click the link on the left to follow me... i tend to tweet mainly about cycling stuff and other guff] some chaps that follow me @tawnycam and @afropaul sent me a great message to let me know i was in the London based free magazine SPORT. This publication comes out once a week and shows off hip stuff and interesting things as well as the week in sport that was and to come. It is handed out at tube and train stations and seen by LOADS of people. I had no idea that my t-shirts were going to appear in the mag but it certainly put a smile on my northern mug as i headed into london on my commute to Mind Candy.

It's been a really busy month... sorry for not posting recently but i am working for Mind Candy in Battersea on their awesome Moshi Monsters project. It has recently topped 15million users and it is brilliant creating fun and funny animations for that large an audience! Rouleur 16 Cover Art...

When i started working with Rouleur the cover art work was the first thing to really stand out to me as it sets the magazine apart from all the others on the market. The cover art often captures the contents of the magazine in one single image, they are strong, iconic and emotive... When i was approached to create the cover art for Rouleur #16 i was honoured and slightly scared at the the thought of buggering up the front cover of such an iconic and well followed publication... but to see it in print along side the others is a really proud moment for me as an illustrator... hope you like it

In October I went to The Cycle Show at Earls Court, walking around on my lonesome I was overwelmed by the amount of amazing bikes/brands and people that make the industry what it is. My aim was to find the guys at Mosquito Bikes and drool slightly over thier range of bikes from American custom builders Idependent Fabrication. While I was there I met Brian Palmer who writes The Washing Machine Post. I have been working with ProCasts again recently and we just completed a large chunk of work with Macmillan Publishing, creating demo videos that explain their new mindOnline language-learning product for teachers and students. Working directly with Macmillan's product lead and script writer to create four screencasts from 2 minutes to 5 minutes that show various aspects of their product. Mock Up Screens...

Mock Up Screens allows people to rapidly demonstrate ideas and prototypes for UI's... It means that if I want to create a web site for a client and need to show them how it's going to look I can drag the bits and bobs into the right place and we can both create a web site they want quickly and easily... nifty. Procasts took the idea of 'a day in the life of your piece of software' and ran with it. Creating a Procast with two characters using Mock Up Screens to get the most out of the tool... EC Merge is a comparison tool. That's the best way I know of describing what is a really cool piece of kit. This was my first full Procasting challenge and was completed by me using CamTasia and Adobe Premeire, Ian has done the V/O but keep your eyes peeled; as I make my V/O debut pretty soon... Crunch is a really clever way of dealing with the thing all freelance types dread, the year end tax return (shudder...) and VAT returns (yawn) it can save you money (huzaaah) whilst being easy to use and super safe (Woop.) Procasts have just finished this screencast for them, take a look and all will be explained. By using 'a day in the life of' as the theme for the cast we managed to keep it up beat, fun and engaging, but importantly informative.

The animation was done in Flash, taking their existing static logo and bringing it to life to create a flowing and swooping globe of light. Check out the screencast below.

As mentioned below, i have started working with ProCasts and this is the first project we worked together on. The video explains the ins and outs of using Adblock Plus, which is a really clever piece of free software you add on to Firefox. It takes away ALL of the adverts from any web page; clever stuff. If you hate pop up's, banners and all that jazz install it now... (there is more info about the project on Ian's Blog)

A couple of weeks back a good friend of mine Niqui Merret introduced me to fellow Brightonian Ian Ozsvald. Ian was on the look out for a creative to join his growing project ProCasts and to come on board to help grow the ProCasts brand by adding animation and graphical branding to current and future screencast projects he was working on. Having never worked with screencast technology, but understanding their growing popularity amongst the tech/software industry I jumped at the chance. 16/02/09 - This is the first movement test for Eddy, hit play and watch him go... Here is the first image of a project i am doing for myself to learn more about Action Script and code in general. It is based around Eddy Merckxs' hour record set in Mexico city in 1972. Merckx used this simple steel framed single speed machine and travelled 49.431km in the hour. Hopefully next time you come back I will have more for you to check out, click on and play with. As always any comments are more than welcome...

I have just completed this commercial to push this years Christian Aid Week, working with soho based studio Finish, and the directors PAM at 2am for the agency Shop.I took Pshop illustrations from EBOY into flash where they were animated and then were then all put together with flame by the FINISH flame wizard Jason Watts. Back in January i worked with Brighton based studio Mind Orchard. The project was to design and animate all the assets for a new Nick JR web-site for a show called Bubble and Squeak, so all the things you see on the site are illustrated/animated by me.
